Oxford University holds a symposium celebrating Chancellor Noriko Mizuta’s work
6月17-8日に水田宗子理事長は英国オックスフォード大学ペンブロークカレッジのローレンス・マン教授とリンダ・フローレス教授の招きにより、水田宗子先生の業績を讃える国際学会での基調講演と、それに続き翻訳に関する学会において、英語に翻訳されたご自身の詩を朗読され、また、その後の翻訳に関する国際学シンポジウムに参加された。
Oxford University Pembroke College held an international conference Celebrating the work of Chancellor Noriko Mizuta, in which Prof. Mizuta gave the key-note speech on the June 17-18, 2019 International conference titled “Poetry, Translation, Education: Celebrating the Work of Professor Noriko Mizuta.” Chancellor Mizuta recited some of her poems in Japanese and then they were translated into English by the students of Japanology, Japanese Literature, and Japanese language of several colleges of the Oxford University. The conference was organized by Prof. Laurence Mann and Prof. Linda Flores, Pembroke College & Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford, England
今回の学会は英国オックスフォード大学ペンブローク・カレッジ(17世紀にペンブローク伯爵によって創設された、おックすフォーｄ大学でも3番目に古いカレッジである）を会場として、「詩、翻訳、教育:水田宗子教授の業績を讃えて
Poetry, translation, education: A celebration of the work of Prof. Noriko Mizuta」と題して水田宗子理事長の業績を讃える日本学のシンポジウムがオックスフォード大学により開催されたものである。
オックスフォード大学は、英国の歴代首相の半数を排出している名門校であり、9世紀から10世紀にかけて形成された
由緒ある街で、大学には40以上のカレッジを有する、まさに街そのものが最高学府を形成している環境そのものである。今回の水田宗子先生の業績を讃えるシンポジウムは、数あるカレッジの中でも
古い歴史を持つペンブローク・カレッジのキャンパスで開催され、参加者も、オックスフォード大学の幾つかのカレッジや、ロンドン大学オリエント・アフリカ研究校(School of Oriental and African Studies, 略してSOAS, London University),アメリカのエモリー大学(アトランタ、ジョージア州)、韓国、日本など世界から多様な学者が参集していたのが印象的だった。
開会あいさつはペンブロークカレッジのマスターと呼ばれるリン・ブリンドリー学長(Dameというknightに叙せられた女性という敬称 )の称号を持つMasterで、Master という職位は学長と説明されました)
総合司会は、オックスフォード大学ペンブロークカレッジのフェロー（評議員）であるリンダ・フローレス教授。(日本に留学した時は、水田宗子先生を論文指導教員として学ばれた方である)
第一部はアメリカのエモリー大学のジュリア・ブロック教授による、水田先生の業績の顕彰し、いかに水田先生がつとに日本女性作家の作品を多数英語に翻訳されたことが、それを若い頃から読んだ自分を含む人びとの中から、いかに多くの日本文学、日本学を志す学者研究者学生が育成されてきたかを示された。
それに続き、水田先生によるキィノートスピーチ「山姥の翻訳」によって、比較文学、文学批評に最先端の道を切り拓かれてきたご自身の経験を話された。大庭みな子、林芙美子、富岡多恵子、円地文子、白石かず子などの日本女性作家たちだけでなく、英米のエドガー・アラン・ポオやシルヴィア・プラス、ヴァージニア・ウルフなど、比較文学、フェミニズム批評の深い学問に根ざした講演をされた。世界中から参集した学者、研究者、また
学生たちは、長い間、先生の作品を学んできた今、こうして直接水田先生から講義を聞く感激に目を輝かせて聞き入っていたのが印象的だった。
第二部は、オックスフォード大学ローレンス・マン教授による司会で、マン教授は、この学会をリンダ・フローレス教授と一緒に企画運営された方で、この学会に向けて、何年間も日本学を学ぶオックスフォード大学の学生たちによる水田先生の詩の英語訳のワークショップや授業を指導されたのである。
第二部の研究発表の最初は、ロンドン大学SOASオリエントアフリカ研究校
のハンナ・オズボーン教授による「水田宗子から金井美恵子へ：テキストを読み翻訳すること」と題する非常に緻密な
そして、新しい視点からの研究発表がなされた。
次に、水田先生によるご自身の三篇の詩の朗読がされた。
これらの詩は、オックスフォード大学の日本学、日本文学、日本語学を学ぶ学生たちが選んで、ワークショップによる体験型学習プログラムで英語訳に挑戦した詩である。学生たちは一言も聞き漏らすまいと、水田先生の朗読に耳を澄ませて聞いていた。その後で、学生たちによる、それらの詩の英語訳が英語で読まれた。参集した学者研究者たちからは、大変良い
翻訳だと、お褒めの言葉が表明され、また、質疑応答が活発になされた。体験型のワークショップの学びは、学生たちに深い印象を与えたことであろう。ここから次世代の日本研究者が育つことが期待できると確信した次第である。
会場には、水田先生による著書が展示され、参加者たちは、親しく手に取って、目を通し、中には「買いたい」という希望を述べる人もいた。水田先生は、学会をオーガナイズされたフローレス教授とマン教授に御自分の著書を贈呈してこられた。きっと今後の研究や授業で役に立てられることであろう。先生がたや学生たちには大変に喜ばれた。

The Tanaka Symposium in Japanese Studies, titled “Poetry, translation, education: A celebration of the work of Prof. Noriko Mizuta”, took place on 17th June 2019 at Pembroke College and the University of Oxford as an exciting event.
Registration
Registration opened at 9.45 in the Harold Lee Room, located on the upper level of Rokos Quad, which is accessed via a bridge, at the far end (left) of Chapel Quad.
Keynote Lectures
We are pleased to announce that the keynote lecture was given by Noriko Mizuta.
Lunch for presenters was served in the Main Hall, Chapel Quad, from 12:30 to 13:30.
After the symposium, at 17:15, participants took a private tour of the Pembroke Art Gallery. More information on the Gallery can be found at: http://www.pembrokejcrart.org/
A drinks reception was held in the Auditorium Foyer after the end of the symposium, from 18:00 to 18:45. Dinner was served thereafter in the Forte Room, next to the main dining Hall in Chapel Quad.
Directions
Pembroke College is located on Pembroke Square just off St Aldate’s in central Oxford.
Oxford has excellent road and rail links, and is not far from major airports. Pembroke is in the centre of the city, with public transport terminals nearby. There is a regular and reliable direct bus service from Heathrow and Gatwick airports to central Oxford, called ‘The Airline’.

「草原の回復」
Recovery in the grass fields
After a prolonged child birth
I lay down upon the grass fields
That moisture
It does not wet my skin
It flows from me
It surrounds me
And then, it ignores me
Forbidden indulgence
I was denied recovery through water
After the end
The wind starts blowing in the grass fields
I cradle grass with my dry skin
Just like a saint
While wiping my cracked lips
I chew on the grass
Words haven’t come back to life yet
There hasn’t been a visible sign of recovery but
On his new bed without bloodstains
In dry grass fields
Just like a rabbit
in silence
I live
still
It is my vision, looking into the distance
Which draws on water
And it becomes hazy.

If you sleep deeply,
Something will surely awaken.
Just as when the seasons change,
The meadow grasses bear buds.

詩はまっていてくれると – Poetry Is Waiting For Me
Poetry is waiting for me;
is the soul that T.S Eliot spoke of
waiting for me, I wonder?
Lurking in a thicket
or laying in a meadow:
For me to catch up with.
Or,
Will it ambush me?
Lying in wait someplace,
As if it might slit my throat
to test its strength.
Am I waiting too, I wonder?
If I walk around town like this:
Aimless, a drifter
just passing the time,
Will I meet it by chance?
Closing in on me
from the beyond.
If I pass through
a foreign country,
Calling out to stop me
suddenly
from behind.
In the ancient ruins
visited by tourists,
Will it be basking
on the bare earth?
Like the space
that I watched intently,
Born of an explosion,
and sucked into a black hole
before disappearing altogether,
Will the days
in my memory, too,
be sucked into
a single spot upon the earth?
To see for myself:
The leaves and ashes
whirling in this garden,

企画運営委員会は、理事高、理事、副所長らの出席によって開催された。
議題
1 研究所の出版について
１）編集担当、出版予定期日、予算などについて
話合われた。
２）ジャーナル3号について
現在入稿済みの原稿と今後の予定について話し合われた。
３）プロシーディングスその他の出版について話し合われた。
2 水田宗子翻訳賞について
水田理事長はじめとする寄附金を基金として「水田宗子翻訳賞」を設置し、賞金・審査謝礼などが話し合われた。趣旨については岩淵副所長が
起草する。
3 プライス悦子グローバルレクチャーについて
伊藤実佐子氏など、研究所内外の有識者による審査委員会を設置する。
ニュースレターの発行と研究所のホームページへのアップが確認された。
また、6月15日から22日まで、水田宗子理事長の業績を顕彰する学会が英国オックスフォード大学ペンブローク・カレッジで開催されることの詳細が話し合われた。水田理事長には和智理事が随行する。

2019年6月13日 （木） 本研究所理事長が会長を務めている日本スウェーデン協会の名誉会員であるノーベル物理学賞受賞者である梶田隆章博士（日本物理学者天文学者東京大学卓越教授、同大特別栄誉教授、東京大学宇宙線研究所長・教授、兼同研究所附属宇宙ニュートリノ観測情報融合センター長）による特別講演会とそれに続く年次晩餐会が駐日スウェーデン大使館において開催された。
梶田隆明章博士による特別講演「カミオカンデ研究について」は午後5時よりスウェーデン大使館内にあるアルフレッド・ノーベル記念講堂において開催され、日本スウェーデン協会会長水田宗子博士による開会の挨拶、またマグナス・ローバック駐日スウェーデン大使によるスピーチのあと、ニュートリノに関する高度な研究内容に関する梶田博士の講演と、会場に参集した百名近くの参加者ｋらの活発な質疑応答がなされた。
講演後、会場をローバック大使ご夫妻の公邸に写して、午後6時45分から9時までなごやかに年次晩餐会が開催された。開会にあたって水田宗子日本スウェーデン協会会長から、これまで駐日スウェーデン大使として日本スウェーデンの友好文化交流に貢献されたローバック大使が離日されるに際しての感謝と送別の意味もあることが説明された。ローバック大使に対しては、日本スウェーデン協会からは、日本の古典音楽に詳しい大使に対して国際メディア・女性文化研究所の小渕洋一理事がご紹介の労をとられた傳杜氏の手作りの竹笛が贈呈された。会場には、城西国際大学で福祉を学ばれスウェーデンに留学された高円宮絢子女王を通してスウェーデンと水田理事長を通して強い友好の関係を祝って城西国際大学を誘致し大学の維持協力に尽くされている東金市長、石崎東金市議会議長、行木英子城西国際大学維持協力会副会長なども駆けつけて国際メディア・女性文化研究所からの陣羽織の贈り物などをローバック大使夫妻に贈呈した。これに大使返礼のスピーチがローバック大使からなされ、また、鴨川市から本多元市長ご紹介によるジョン・海山・ネプチューン氏による尺八演奏などが人びとを楽しませた。

Welcoming speech at the lecture by Dr. Takaaki Kajita and the 2019 Annual Dinner Party of JSS and the farewell party for Ambassador Magnus Roback

Dear friends of JSS, Ambassador Robuch and our honorable guest Dr. Kajita,
It is indeed a great pleasure for me and for JSS to be able to hold the annual dinner party of 2019. We are very honored to have a lecture by Dr. Takaaki Kajita, who is the recipient of the Noble Prize of 2014.
First of all, I would like to express our gratitude to Ambassador Robuch for his generousity for letting us use the Embassy Auditorium for this lecture and the residence for the following dinner for JSS. His generosity gave a special significance to our activity. I hope we could express again our deep-felt gratitude to Ambassador at our farewell party following the lecture.
JSS have been active in promoting civil, good will close relations between Japan and Sweden in the past 90 years. We are very thankful to all the supporters of JSS and members of our society who showed all these years unshakable love and respect to both countries and tied us with deep friendship.
Today my only regret is the shortness of time. Dr. Kajita’s contribution of the field of physics and the study of universe is all very well known; he is not only a pride of Japan and the world but also of JSS as he is our honorary member. I would like to thank him sincerely for taking time out of his extraordinary busy schedule to give us a lecture at our most important Annual Dinner Event.
